Rare find – photo of Gov. Jerry Brown running the river in 1974
This rare image is the only one on river from the trip that Jerry Brown took in June 1974 to announce his support of Proposition 17 while he was running for governor. ARTA’s Larry Orman is guiding, Jerry Brown is back left in dark blue paddling jacket, across from him is the LA Times reporter Bill Boyarsky in a yellow nylon jacket, and in front are Jerry Meral and Rob Caughlan, key members of the campaign (and Jerry an expert paddler). Because the trip was at high water, the paddle raft was frequently out of sight of the other oar rafts with other reports and campaign staff. ARTA’s David Kay, co-founder of FOR with Jerry Meral and Rob Caughlan, was close enough to get this image, which came from Martin Blake’s archive (the original photo is lost, this is a fuzzy print).
