Disabled wilderness advocates in San Francisco at vigil in protest of filling New Melones Dam
Advocates for open access to wilderness organized as the Stanislaus Wilderness Action Committee (SWAC) in 1978 and carried out protests at various times until 1981. For them (and so many others), the Stanislaus River was easy access to an amazing wilderness experience, something made particularly possible by the work of etc, later Environmental Traveling Companions. Here a SWAC group holds a candlelight vigil at the San Francisco City Hall. Back row, from left: (Needs ID), Graciella Rossi (with candle), Lani Silver, Susan Connor, Jeanne Marlow, Kate Kain. Man in wheelchair with back to camera is Michael Pachovas. Needs ID for other people and the nature of this event.
